Bain, a Cleveland native, graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) with a Bachelor of Science in Social Work. She has continued giving back to the RIT community by working as an Admissions Counselor at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) since 2007. Her main responsibility is to assist deaf/hard of hearing undergraduate students prepare for the college experience. Bain also works with hearing students interested in ASL-English Interpretation, and graduate students interested in secondary education for the deaf/hard of hearing.
Through her national and international travels, Bain has developed an affinity for working with deaf individuals all over the world. Her passion began early on while traveling with a selective performing arts program under Gallaudet University to conduct workshops with local deaf organizations in South Africa, Mexico, and Romania. Bain’s travel bug has also carried her to Italy, Israel, and Turkey. When she first learned about DDW, Bain knew this was part of her calling and began her involvement as Mistress of Ceremonies at DDW’s “Discovering Shuktara” Release Party Fundraiser in the summer of 2009. Bain is now serving as a DDW Coordinator/Guide for the DDW: Journeys program.Bain, a firm deaf advocate, believes in giving back to the community in any way imaginable. The lifelines of such communities depend on those who are passionate about cross-cultural relationships, interconnectedness, and the betterment of deaf communities as a whole. The South African humanist philosophy by Ubuntu is Bain’s lifelong mantra: “I am because you are.”
